Travel system, 3-in-1 or pushchair

A travel system is one chassis with a carrycot for the first months and a seat for later. A 3-in-1 adds an infant car seat that clicks onto the same chassis with adapters.

A pushchair is lighter and nimbler, but not every pushchair is suitable from birth. The manufacturer states from what age or weight the seat may be used.

Lying flat at first

For newborns, manufacturers state a flat lying position. That can be a carrycot, a soft carrycot or a seat that reclines fully flat. If the seat says ‘from 6 months’, you need something else for the first months.

Does it suit your days?

If you mostly walk on pavements and in shops, a narrow chassis and swivel front wheels count. On unpaved paths and in the dunes, bigger wheels, often with air tyres, ride more smoothly.

Also look at what you feel every day: the height of the handlebar, the room in the basket and the weight when you carry it up the stairs.

Folding and taking it along

The folded size is in the specifications as length, width and height. Compare it with your boot, hallway or lift. Some models fold with the seat attached; with others you take it off first.

If you also want to take it on a plane or train, look at a travel pushchair: smaller and lighter, usually for when your baby is a little bigger.
